The Urban Environment: Architecture
Novosibirsk architecture was glorified not only by the grand Opera and Ballet Theatre but also unusual houses representing the Constructivist style in architecture. Sadly, only a few buildings in this style have been preserved in Russia. Initially Novosibirsk was established as an industrial city, which is reflected in the geometry of many important city buildings designed to be symbols of the labor movement.
The House with the Clock
All people who live in Novosibirsk have seen the House with the Clock. But not everybody knows that just one person has looked after it for the past 30 years. Once a week he winds the clock, lifting a weight, weighing of a hundred kilos using a winch, so that the clock always shows the correct time.
100 Appartaments house
In addition to the Constructivists’ legacy, there are many buildings of the Stalin era. The most well-known and outstanding of the Post-constructivist buildings is the 100 Appartaments house, Stokvartirny dom on Krasny Prospekt.
The house was designed by the eminent architect A. Kryachkov and was awarded the Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Paris. The building has always been home for the elite: three-meter ceilings, parquet flooring, tiled flooring in the entrance, a six-meter room for a maid ... Although the house is named 100 Appartame, there are actually 110 appartaments in it.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the first stone building in Novosibirsk
Lovers of religious architecture may be interested in Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Ascension Chapel of St. Nicholas, located in the central part of the city.
Merchants' houses built before the revolution are also a distinctive feature of the architecture in the central part of the city. Today the best restaurants and shops in Novosibirsk are located in these houses.
